I use data to make site-specific installations to comment on social/political issues such as migration and hate crime. Currently I am gathering anti – Muslim hate crime statistics to make people aware of the consequences that the global war on terror has had in ostracising Muslims. I paint directly onto walls often using circular stamps to transform interior spaces and make the work more immersive. The paint is applied methodologically within a grid to allow for the information to be translated and suggest some sort of structure to the arrangement of the circles. The work is abstract to allow an audience to initially enjoy the aesthetics of the work before being introduced to its themes.
Being visibly Muslim myself, my work aims to address my own fears of being attacked because of the way I look in a climate where there is growing hostility towards people like me, and I want to combat the spread of misinformation about Muslims that is present within the media. By using data in my art, people can experience information that they would usually find on a chart/graph in a way that is more emotionally engaging.
The target audience of my work are those who are interested in experiencing data translation in a different way, people who enjoy viewing works that blur the lines between abstraction and décor, those who are socially/politically engaged, and anyone who may have misconceptions of Muslims.
